Measured survey FAQs

A measured survey creates a detailed internal and external map of an existing building structure, land or property. It provides detailed dimensions and gives a graphical representation in the form of a as built drawing depicting what architectural elements and structural elements are there right now. The level of detail can be tailored to the precise project’s requirements. This can range from 2D floor plans right through to interactive 3D building models.

The cost of measured building survey will depend on the specific project, its location and client requirements. The factors we would consider are:

  • The size and complexity of the building
  • The level of surveying on site
  • How much detail is needed
  • The delivery timescales
  • The level of outputs

Our fees start from £1400 for a small terraced dwelling including scan on site, model, 2D sections and layouts. Commercial and larger schemes can be priced per square feet or fixed fee.

Measured building surveys collect the key building data needed to inform building works such as property redevelopments, building extensions and restorations. Robust survey data provides the foundation for the project information used by your architects, designers, and contractors.

How long a measured survey takes depends on several factors including:

  • the age and size of the building
  • the construction type
  • the level of defects
  • whether the building is occupied or unoccupied
  • the amount of furnishing and carpets within the building.

By commissioning a measured building survey from Real Scan, architects or developers spend less time taking measurements and more have more time to spend on the design and delivery aspects of your project. Our clients have the comfort of knowing that our proven expertise means that know the best practice methods to get precise and accurate building information for your design team to then work from. Our fast turnaround time also means that we can get you your data and models delivered fast.

Data from a measured building survey can be presented in many ways depending on the client’s project requirements. Some of the common methods that we deliver include providing raw point cloud data for use in BIM model surveys and REVIT applications, converting the data into 3D models using CAD and visualisation software, as well as creating 2D CAD plans and PDF/paper copies. Feel free to reach out to discuss your precise requirements.

Laser scanning technology is often used to capture the data used to create floor plans for measured building surveys. The technology scans the internal and external surfaces of the building, creating a comprehensive point cloud model that can be utilised in BIM and REVIT applications. This is then ready for use by architects to use to create 2D and 3D models and design drawings.

The scans from our measured surveys are compatible with the construction industry standard technology including CAD and Vectorworks to create 2D and 3D models. Our outputs can also be used in Revit to create a set of drawings.
